Former Reds star Denis Irwin – who claimed seven league crowns with the club – thinks they are well equipped to do so following the signing of £75million hitman Romelu Lukaku.
. He said on Talksport :
“Lukaku is a 25 goals-a-season striker, I expect Marcus to even better this year and I see [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan improving a lot as well, so I expect to see more goals.
But Irwin expects the former Everton man and Marcus Rashford to propel the Reds into title contention this season.
Manchester United must score more goals to win the Premier League title.
“I expect them to challenge [for the title] this year.” Irwin also believes the arrival of latest signing Nemanja Matic – a £35m buy from Chelsea – will give the club a huge boost.
United scored 54 times in the Premier League in 2016/17 compared to champions Chelsea’s 85.
“I was a little bit surprised by the fact Chelsea are selling to their rivals who will be challenging for the Premier league next year,” he added.
